Case Study - Melbourne & Olympic Parks

A modern new look produced locally in Australia

After 20 years of wearing the same uniform, Cargo Crew were thrilled to be chosen by Melbourne & Olympic Parks to refresh their crew look to reflect the world-class events they host at the precinct.

Brief and outcome

It's been 20 years since Melbourne & Olympic Parks (M&OP) had a new uniform and a lot has changed since then! With new venues and a phenomenal $972 million-dollar redevelopment, M&OP has evolved exponentially and it was time for their crew to don a modern uniform that reflects who they are today.

To bring this uniform range to life, M&OP tasked Cargo Crew to have as much as of the range produced in Australia, and in possible, Victoria. The brief for Cargo Crew and RMIT University was to develop a new range of 'sportsluxe' uniforms that merges fashion and functionality.

The RMIT University and Cargo Crew collaboration saw two fashion students designing the range, with Cargo Crew adding the final design touches and managing the production of the garments locally in Melbourne.

The result? A unique uniform range that staff can proudly wear to work, and a look that unifies their team.

Job function and scale

The thousands of team members at M&OP required a modern staff uniform across five job functions:

  • Guest services
  • Management
  • Corporate
  • Security
  • Operations

After conceptualizing, designing, and pitching their ideas - RMIT's School of Fashion and Textiles students Lili McKenzie and Talia Rubenstein were awarded the opportunity to have their uniform design developed by us.

Inspired by the architecture of the M&OP precinct and the use of triangles in the buildings, Lili and Talia's designs combine function and style. They opted for high-performance and sports fabrics in the range, reimagined classic garment designs, incorporated sophisticated pockets, and heroed Melbourne in the design.

Made in Australia

M&OP have put Victorian businesses first in the rollout of their uniform - committing to produce a uniform range that is ethically sourced and locally made.

With this focus in mind, we engaged with a range of local fabric and garment manufacturers, pattern makers and graders, dye houses and many more suppliers to bring to life a range of premium garments, fit for M&OP to deliver world-class events.

The project provided Cargo Crew with the opportunity to deepen local manufacturing relationships and utilise the broad skill set that delivered a premium, locally manufactured uniform program. The majority of the Cargo Crew garments in the Melbourne & Olympic Parks range have been made in Australia and are accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia.

"Cargo Crew has been immensely proud to be part of the new M&OP uniform project. This unique program allowed us to collaborate with not only a like-minded client in M&OP, but it also provided us the opportunity to work with RMIT University and in particular the Fashion and Textiles students, to deliver a world-class, modern and functional uniform.

The project also offered us the chance to reconnect with the local manufacturing industry and deliver a quality program at scale with a large majority manufactured right here in Melbourne."

FELICITY RODGERS
Founder and Creative Director, Cargo Crew

This experience provided Felicity Rodgers and many of the Cargo Crew team the unique opportunity to come full circle, as RMIT alumni fashion graduates themselves.

To launch the range, an equally show stopping runway was needed to put the M&OP staff in the spotlight and celebrate the truly local collaboration brought to life. Hosted in Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, it married the local teams, the iconic architectural designs and the scale of Melbourne & Olympic Parks sporting precinct.

“The ongoing collaboration between RMIT, Cargo Crew and M&OP sets the benchmark for these types of projects, while the support we’ve had from Creative Victoria and Sport and Recreation Victoria has enabled us to develop a uniform which our staff love to wear, and which represents who we are.”
